Nii Aban Boi II Seitse Assumes Regent Role at Abeka Following Suspension of Nii Boi IV

In December 2022, the Nii Boi Royal Family unanimously resolved to suspend Nii Boi IV as Abeka Mantse indefinitely, citing unlawful enstoolments and misconduct. Nii Aban Boi II Seitse was appointed regent pending a Ga Traditional Council determination.

Background: The Abeka Stool and the Nii Boi Royal Family

The Abeka stool is the traditional seat of authority for the Abeka community within the Asere Division of the Ga Traditional Area, Greater Accra. Since the founding of Abeka by Nii Boi I, the stool has been held in trust by the Nii Boi Royal Family for the people of Abeka. The chief (Mantse) is not merely a ceremonial figure — under Ga custom, the Mantse is the legal custodian of stool lands, the presiding authority in community disputes, and the official representative of Abeka before the Ga Traditional Council and the Government of Ghana.

The Suspension of Nii Boi IV

On 5 December 2022, following a formal petition from the Nii Boi Royal Family to the Ga Traditional Council, Nii Boi IV was suspended from the Abeka stool. The petition cited four principal grounds:

  • Unlawful enstoolment of a Queen Mother: On 25 November 2022, Nii Boi IV purported to install Regina Naa Dedei Armah as Queen Mother of Abeka. In Ga custom, the Queen Mother (Manye) must be selected by the royal family, not installed unilaterally by the sitting chief. This action was deemed a fundamental breach of customary procedure.
  • Unlawful installation of a Dzaase: Nii Boi IV purported to install Tawiah Dodoo as Dzaase (sub-chief) of Abeka — again without the authority or consent of the Nii Boi Royal Family, and in direct contravention of the 2002 High Court perpetual injunction (Suit No. Misc. 1675/2002) which specifically protects the Family's exclusive right to enstool within Abeka.
  • Arrogant and divisive conduct: The petition documented a pattern of conduct described as incompatible with the dignity and responsibilities of the stool.
  • Financial misconduct: Allegations of mismanagement of stool resources and funds were also presented to the Council.

The Ga Traditional Council, after review, upheld the petition and formally suspended Nii Boi IV from the exercise of his functions as Abeka Mantse pending a full investigation and adjudication of the substantive chieftaincy dispute.

Nii Aban Boi II Seitse Appointed as Regent

Following the suspension, the Ga Traditional Council and the Nii Boi Royal Family appointed Nii Aban Boi II Seitse as Regent of Abeka. A regent in Ga custom is appointed to exercise the functions of the stool during a period of interregnum — whether caused by the death of a chief, a prolonged dispute, or, as in this case, the suspension of a sitting Mantse.

Nii Aban Boi II Seitse is a senior member of the Nii Boi Royal Family with deep roots in the lineage of the Abeka stool. His appointment as Regent was accepted and recognised by the Ga Traditional Council, which is the statutory body with oversight over all Ga chieftaincy matters under Ghanaian law.

The Current Position

As of 2025, Nii Aban Boi II Seitse continues to serve as Regent of Abeka. The substantive dispute regarding the Abeka chieftaincy — including the legality of Nii Boi IV's actions and the question of whether he should be destooled rather than merely suspended — remains before the Ga Traditional Council. The outcome of the parallel dispute over the Ga Mantse paramountcy (Nii Adama Latse II vs. Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, before the Supreme Court of Ghana) may also have implications for how the Abeka matter is resolved, as the Ga Mantse is the ultimate traditional authority over all sub-stools including Abeka.

The Nii Boi Royal Family maintains that the stool, the stool lands, and all traditional authority within Abeka remain vested in the family under the laws of Ghana and the customs of the Ga people.
